Design for Generations

La Sagrada Familia

    Ever under construction?

“My client is not in a hurry”

A large unfinished church building in the Eixample district of Barcelona. The construction has been taking so long that already completed parts have to be renovated again. Yet, this is not uncommon for churches of this size. With the build of this and any large building at the time, the creator never saw its design finished. During the long construction of la Sagrada Familia, knowledge and skills have been passed down from one generation to the next, making collaborating partners hundreds of years apart. This and any cathedral are the literal example of cathedral thinking: pursuing an ambitious goal or idea that might require several generations to complete.
